Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Cleaning in Austin, TX | Ashton Chimney
We provide independent Gelco chimney cleaning, cap, damper, and liner service across Austin, TX, and the one thing that changes how Gelco equipment behaves here is the burn pattern itself. Austin’s mild winters mean most Gelco-lined fireplaces get lit maybe a dozen times a year, and that sporadic use creates hard, glazed creosote rather than dry soot. A Gelco liner can look clean from the top and still carry a tar-like glaze that a standard visual check misses. Call (855) 507-9184 for Gelco service in Austin, and we’ll put a camera in the flue to know for sure.

Why Austin Residents Choose Us for Gelco Service
Gelco components show up all over Austin, in 1930s Hyde Park bungalows, Travis Heights pier-and-beam houses, and 2000s infill builds with prefab wood fireplaces. Our crew has pulled enough Gelco caps, dampers, and liner sections to know exactly how they fit, where they fail, and what’s worth repairing versus replacing. We’re an independent service provider, not a factory-authorized dealer, which means we answer to you, not a manufacturer’s sales quota. Owner Nolan Pruett grew up in Cedar Park and worked through the Building Trades program at Austin Community College’s Round Rock campus, then spent his twenties getting hands-on with fireplaces and flues across the Austin metro. He’s been sweeping chimneys in this area for going on fifteen years now, and he’s the guy neighbors call when a Level 2 inspection turns up a liner problem someone else walked past. That’s the standard we bring to every Gelco job in Austin. See our full Gelco sales & service page for the broader scope of what we handle.

Common Gelco Chimney Cleaning Problems We Solve in Austin
These are the repeat offenders we find on Gelco systems across Austin. Each one has a local angle, which matters because a repair that works for a heavily burned chimney in the Midwest can miss the mark here — the same way Gelco repair in Barton Creek needs its own approach.
- Glazed creosote bridging at Gelco liner seams. When a fireplace burns only a few times a season, creosote never gets hot enough to dry out. It glazes, and on Gelco flexible liners that glaze collects hardest at the seam ridges between sections. We’ve pulled liners in Austin that looked fine at the cap but carried a sticky, tar-like bridge along every joint. That’s a chimney fire waiting for the one cold snap when someone finally loads the firebox.
- Seized Gelco top-mount dampers after a long hot season. Six months of heat and humidity with the damper shut is hard on the pivot hardware. Gelco top-mount assemblies corrode or bind, so come November the damper either won’t open or won’t seal. That stuck-open damper is how summer humidity and rain-driven moisture get into the flue all year.
- Rusted cap fasteners and loose mounting collars. Gelco stainless caps hold up to the sun, but the fasteners don’t always. On exterior masonry chimneys, especially older limestone ones exposed to full sun and hard freezes, the hardware rusts and the cap pulls loose. We find squirrel nests and bird debris in Gelco caps all over Austin, most often in the oak-shaded lots of 78704 and 78702 where caps have been missing or rusted out for years.
- Misaligned top plates where Gelco liners run inside clay tile. Austin’s expansive clay soils shift with every wet-dry cycle. When an original clay tile flue moves, a Gelco liner riding inside can shift at the top plate, leaving an uneven collar that lets water track down between the liner and the tile. That’s a slow leak that rots out the smoke shelf and damper housing before anyone sees water in the firebox.
- Spalling masonry around the cap and crown. It’s not a Gelco part failure, but it causes them. Cracked crowns and shoulders on exposed limestone chimneys let water behind the cap mount, and the freeze-thaw cycle does the rest. In Austin the first hard freeze of the year is when we get the calls.
Gelco Service in Austin: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment
Here’s the thing that makes Austin different from, say, Georgetown or even Cedar Park. Austin’s core neighborhoods, Travis Heights, Hyde Park, Clarksville, sit on limestone and clay that predates the 1950s building boom, and many of those original masonry chimneys were built from soft, locally quarried limestone with mortar that never loved Central Texas’s wet-dry cycle. The crown was the structural anchor for whatever cap and liner system got installed decades later. When the crown cracks and shifts, everything mounted to it, your Gelco cap, your Gelco top plate, your damper housing, moves with it. We see it most in Travis Heights, where pier-and-beam foundations ride the clay through every drought and soak. A Gelco liner itself might be sound, but the top plate has pulled a quarter inch off the crown and water’s been tracking down the outside of the liner ever since. If you’re in 78704 or 78702 and your Gelco cap looks tilted or there’s staining below it, that’s the most likely story. We check every Gelco job in Austin for exactly this, because in this city the cap and crown need inspection as much as the liner itself. Beyond chimney equipment, our Austin service area page covers the full range of what we do across the metro.
Gelco Models & Products We Service in Austin
We work across the Gelco product line you’re most likely to find in Austin homes:
- Gelco stainless steel flexible chimney liner kits, including the common 5.5″ and 6″ wood-burning setups, and the insulated versions used for gas and oil venting.
- Gelco Top-Dog and multi-flue chimney caps, the stainless models found on everything from 1940s masonry chimneys to 2010s builder-grade fireplaces.
- Gelco fireplace dampers and top-mount damper assemblies, both the original equipment and the replacement top-mount units.
- Gelco single-wall and insulated rigid stovepipe sections used on freestanding wood and pellet stoves around the Austin area.
On parts, we fit OEM Gelco components when the existing assembly is sound and the part is still available. When an OEM piece is discontinued or the fit calls for a change, we’ll tell you that plainly and use a quality aftermarket stainless equivalent. Nothing gets swapped without you knowing what’s going in and why. And if your Gelco liner is intact and only the cap or damper has failed, we repair those pieces rather than push a full re-line.

FAQs – Gelco Chimney Cleaning in Austin
Yes, and this is the Austin-specific reason. A Gelco liner that burns only a few times a season accumulates glazed creosote that doesn’t look like the fluffy black soot people expect. It forms a hard, tar-like coating along the liner walls and especially at the seams. A visual check from the top will miss it. A proper sweep and a camera inspection will find it. If you haven’t had your Gelco liner swept in a couple years, call (855) 507-9184 and we’ll show you exactly what’s in there.
The long hot season is the problem. Austin summers leave dampers shut for six straight months, and humidity plus heat causes the pivot hardware on Gelco top-mount assemblies to corrode or bind. When you finally go to open it in November, it sticks, or it won’t seal shut. We service and replace Gelco damper assemblies all fall. Call (855) 507-9184 and we’ll get it moving or swap it before the first real burn.
Absolutely, and we see it on Hyde Park chimneys regularly. The crown is what the Gelco cap and top plate mount to, and original limestone crowns in Hyde Park take full sun, rain, and hard freezes. Once the crown cracks or the mortar washes out, the cap mount loosens and the top plate shifts, and water gets in. A cracked crown doesn’t just look bad. It shortens the life of every Gelco component mounted to it.
Not necessarily, but something has to come out and the entry point has to be fixed. We’ve found squirrels nested inside flues with Gelco liners, especially in Travis Heights and 78704, and we’ve handled similar Gelco repair in Lost Creek where caps are missing or rusted off. The liner itself is usually intact. The cap, screen, and top plate are the issue. We’ll sweep out the debris, check the liner with a camera, and install a new Gelco cap so it doesn’t happen again. Call (855) 507-9184 and we’ll take care of it.
Depends entirely on the liner’s condition, and the only way to know is with a camera. If the Gelco liner is intact and only the cap, damper, or top plate has failed, we repair those pieces and leave the liner alone. That’s usually the case. If the liner itself has cracked, separated, or deteriorated, we’ll show you the footage and explain your options. A full re-line is not our default answer. Call (855) 507-9184 for a free estimate and we’ll tell you what you actually need.
